Student Support Services
The Western Cape College Student Support Services team supports all students and staff at the Weipa and Mapoon Campuses in the areas of:-
- Student Health and Well-Being
- Behaviour Support and Management
- Inclusive Education
- Learning and Disability Support
Currently Western Cape College has two Guidance Officers who work as a members of the student support services team. The Guidance Officers provide support and assistance to students and families across a wide range of issues. They also work closely with administration, teachers and staff to ensure that the welfare needs of all students are met.
Guidance Officers provide a direct service to both individuals and groups of students. Students may self-refer or be referred by parents, teachers or members of the administration. Guidance Officers provide counselling and advice on personal issues, resources and advice on careers and courses, personal development and mental health issues. They are also involved in behaviour management and give advice to parents.
Although they are members of the school staff, they are able to extend beyond the teacher role and handle sensitive situations in a confidential manner. They also maintain links with and can refer students and families to outside agencies.
The role of a Guidance Officer is very broad and they can be involved in many areas. These may include:
- Assessing students’ placement and specialist support needs.
- Personal counselling in relation to individual safety and crisis management.
- Helping students manage relationships and behavioural difficulties.
- Study skills development.
- Ascertainment of students with special needs.
- Career counselling and advice.
- Subject and Course selection.
- Career planning and decision making.
- Overseeing tertiary applications through QTAC.
- Providing Information on jobs and how to get them.
- Supporting Independent Students.
- Student Education and Transition Plans.
- Accessing Services.
Western Cape College has a School Based Health Nurse, who works across the Weipa, Mapoon, and Aurukun communities. This role involves:-
- Acting as a health resource person for individuals, school communities and general community through conducting education sessions for staff and their families.
- Advocating for the inclusion of vital health content into the school curriculum.
- Coordinating the implementation Well Child Health Checks in primary school setting.
- Providing confidential individual health consultations and referral for young people and families and staff within the school setting.
Students who access the School Based Health Nurse who are under the age of 12 need the consent of a parent or care giver and can only be accessed through family consultations.
Students who are over the age of 13 can access the service without the permission of a parent or care giver. Their consultations are considered confidential and are between the student and the nurse.
