Message from the Head of Weipa Campus

If you are reading this booklet, it probably means that you are enrolling your child in Year 1of the Western Cape College-Weipa Campus (P-12). All agree that this is a big occasion for both rents and your child. We offer your child a sincere welcome to the school, and we also extend this welcome to you.

Your child's time at our school will be unique in that each stage of development that he/she will pass through will occur only once in his/her lifetime. We know that you will want to be part of this development. Together, we (you and the school) can guide and promote this development. We can work together in a partnership and really that is what education at this school is all about - a partnership between parents and school, where we work together to encourage your child to grow intellectually, emotionally, physically and socially.

From time to time, matters of concern to you may arise regarding your child and the education process. We are always willing to discuss these matters with you. Please contact the school and a mutually convenient time for discussion will be arranged.

It is a fact that your preparation beforehand will have a large bearing on the actual success and happiness of your child's first and subsequent days at school.

Here are a few hints to help you in your preparation:

1. The Prospectus is a valuable source of information regarding school. Please read it carefully so that you know how and why the school operates. A copy of the booklet can be obtained from the Office

2. Encourage your child to look forward to starting school, and not be fearful of school or teachers. School really is a happy place.

3. On the first day of school, take your child to the classroom and leave him/her with the teacher. Please leave when the teacher indicates, as delaying departure may tend to cause a few tears. Tears are fairly natural, and your presence will maintain the flow. Once parents are out of sight, children settle down quickly (believe it or not!).

4. Remember each child is different and therefore it is unfair to compare any child with his brothers, sisters or neighbours.

5. The more you become part of the school, then the more your child will become part of the school. You can do this by offering your services as a parent helper, by attending P&C and School Council Meetings, by helping with school functions, working at our tuckshop or just simply by visiting the school from time to time.

We trust that you and your child's association with our school will be a long and pleasant one, and again, if at any time there is something further you wish to know about school matters, please do not hesitate to contact us.
