Weipa Campus Overview
The largest of Western Cape College Campuses, Weipa provides schooling from Prep to Year 12 with the Campus located across the road along Central Avenue. Weipa provides schooling across all three levels of Staged Schooling; Junior, Middle and Senior from Prep to Year 12.
The Weipa Campus operates in a township of approximately 3000 people and has been developed due to the presence of RioTinto Alcan bauxite mining operations.
As the largest Campus with approximately 980 students and 70 teachers, access to College facilities including the Resource Centre, Performing Arts Complex and purpose built Special Education Centre is freely available.
The Weipa Campus is also regarded as a leader in educational reform and offers Weipa and the close-by community of Napranum outstanding educational outcomes by engaging with the community and providing a wide variety of value-based school experiences.
Like all Western Cape College Campuses, Weipa applies an integrated curriculum based on the Bound for Success Strategy and uses innovative teaching techniques, to help students engage in the learning process.
Whilst Junior and Middle School Departments focus on numeracy, literacy, education engagement and personal development the Senior Department focuses on Senior Education and Training (SET) plans and student pathways through The Service Guarantee program.
In 2006, the College Special Education Unit was opened and has four full time teachers and a Head of Student Services servicing all the College Campuses. In 2008, this unit continues to expand with increased enrolments and staffing.
As part of the Senior Education and Training plans Weipa Campus is committed to the Service Guarantee for Cape and Torres Strait Schools which ensure all High School students upon graduation receive either an OP score, complete a School based Apprenticeship or Traineeship, be on a clearly articulated VET pathway or gain employment.
A testament to the success of the program is that 100% of all Year 12 students in 2006 and 2007 met the requirements of the program and are now further developing their careers on other pathways.
Due to its rapid growth, the Weipa Campus is currently receiving new facilities for its students. New classrooms for Years 5 and 6 students, covered walkways and upgrades to existing facilities were completed in 2006. A new Resource Centre in 2007 was also completed and construction is about to commence on a new Performing Arts complex, new Administration building and new Home Economics Kitchen as well as a purpose built special Education Unit.
The Weipa Campus also maintains a strong partnership with the Weipa Hostel. The Hostel provides living away from home boarding facilities for Indigenous students from neighbouring Cape York Communities, allowing them the opportunity to attend Secondary School.
