Education must be about much more than just learning through a classroom environment. If we are to properly prepare our young people to become the leaders of our communities and society in the future, we must give them more than just knowledge, more than just competency with words and numbers. If the Western Cape College is to fulfil its promise to the people of Cape York, it has to find ways to give our young people a sense of purpose, the skills to succeed in society and the self-confidence to strike out on their own paths, to achieve their own dreams. Events like the Croc Festival provide the opportunities for deeper learning. They help students feel a part of a larger community, they reduce the sense of isolation that is a natural inhibition for people living in the more remote parts of our State and they provide an opportunity for students to apply their creativity and express their individuality. The Western Cape College seeks to find or develop these opportunities as an essential part of its curriculum. The Croc Festival, and the other functions and events included here, are just the start of what we plan to be an expanding calendar of external learning and growing opportunities for our students. Just as external events offer great opportunities for our students to learn about themselves and the wider society in which they live, so do internal College competitions and gatherings offer rich learning opportunities. Competing in the right atmosphere, with a focus on sportsmanship and fun, helps to build a strong sense of community, promotes physical fitness and good health and allows our students to connect with people their own age, who share common issues and a common future. |
