Windeward Bound

Year 3W students visit the Windeward Bound at Evans Landing Wharf during the ships Weipa stopover as the ship circumnavigates Australia reinacting Matthew Flinders historic mapping voyage 200 years ago.

Some thoughful questions were asked of the crew... and then a few more!

Students Set Sail

Lennox Sigai and Michael Davey were the lucky recipients of a two week scholarship aboard the Windeward Bound. The apprehensive and excited students cast off for a fortnight of unknown adventure on Saturday 1st June. The students will sail to Aurukun, Karumba, Sweers Island, Mornington Island, The Sir Edward Pellew Group and finally to Groote. The students will fly home to Weipa thanks to the generosity of local businesses.

The students will be involved in all aspects of running a square rig sailing ship. Their duties will include being part of a watch that cooks, cleans, prepares and sets ropes and sails and navigates. The students will also be involved in surveys on wildlife counts and rubbish throughout our region.

The scholarship was provided by Coast Care and through the generous donations of Weipa Travel Land and Queensland Country Credit Union the students have this wonderful and very exciting opportunity.
