I am pleased to report that the majority of stage one of the Weipa Campus Master Plan has been commissioned out by Central Office, Brisbane. It is all action with a very short timeline set for the completion, the target being the end of October. This approval is based on the growth in enrolments over the past 12 months and focuses on extra classrooms for the Year 4/5/6, a specialist block for the Middle School, a secure covered bike rack area and a large covered area with toilet facilities.
Martin Cooper from Ridgemill Project Management Company has been assigned the project manager role and is leading the consultation process. Two weeks ago the consultation team arrived in Weipa negotiating with Administration and teachers, establishing the location and designs of the buildings. One week later the Architect had completed the initial drawings and returned to Weipa for the final consultation. A few minor adjustments were done and then the signing off of the plans occurred. This now takes us into the next phase of the project- tender process. Overall, Weipa staff has been very pleased with the end result and look forward to the construction phase.
The drawing at the top indicates the location of the buildings on the existing CROC stage/oval area and at the rear of the Resource Centre. Drawing on the right: The year 4/5/6 Middle School classrooms have been designed in pods of 3 classrooms with a shared space that will have a technology focus (minimum of 20 computers) and 2 outdoor learning areas. Two blocks are to be constructed.
The Specialist block is designed to meet the needs of the Middle School and Senior School in providing state of the art facilities in Instrumental Music, Graphical Design, Visual Arts and Technology.
A strong technology focus has been demanded across the respective curriculum areas and all classrooms are to be fully air-conditioned. The specifications also include landscaping, covered walkways and hopefully, solutions to our existing flooding problems. Some facilities will need to be relocated to other parts of the school, for example the cricket nets, sports shed, external power outlets, the shot put and discus circles. The existing CROC Stage area will be levelled off for a future administration block, however we have been able to negotiate its replacement in the form of a mobile stage that meets the CROC's specifications. This will become a great community asset for any future community events. These are very symbolic and exciting times for Weipa with Education Queensland acknowledging that educational facilities in the Western Cape College are the number one priority for the Far Northern Region.
