Western Cape College is pleased to announce the appointment of Ian Mackie, the new Director of Western Cape College. 

Ian comes to the college with a wealth of experience in education and training and a drive to improve education outcomes for our students. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 Ian began his career as a teacher in 1980 at Blackwater State High School where he taught for five years.  Ian then was transferred to Biloela State High School where he remained until 1992. 

In 1993 Ian was elected by his peers as President of the Queensland Teachers� Union (QTU).  As President, Ian became involved in all aspects of education, from the creation of syllabi to improving the working conditions of Queensland teachers.

Ian was also Vice President of the Australian Education Union and the Australian Delegate for Education International.  In these two roles he was involved in forming educational policies at National and International levels.

Ian has held various positions in Government including:

  • Ombudsman for Training and Apprenticeships (Department of Employment and Training)
  • Executive Director Community Engagement Division (Department of Premier and Cabinet)
  • Principal Policy Advisor (Education Queensland)
Most recently Ian has fulfilled the role of Head of the Aurukun Campus for Western Cape College where he successfully improved attendance and community engagement.  In this role Ian demonstrated his commitment to improving the education outcomes of Cape York communities.
